ABOUT THE PRODUCT:
Chickens are popular right now as pets for their beauty and utility. I am producing one-of-a-kind, life-size handmade sculptures of chickens as indoor decorative items. Indoor Chickens were conceived as an alternative to the popular backyard chicken craze sweeping the county. Indoor chickens offer many of the benefits of backyard chickens like companionship and beauty but are considerably easier to care for. These birds are crafted from recycled plastic jugs (bleach bottles, milk jugs, water bottles, vinegar bottles, even olive oil bottles). Nearly every part of these fowl has a sustainability feature from the epoxy to the paper mache. They are covered in recycled sheet music. You can specify the rooster’s favorites, Here Comes the Sun or Morning Has Broken. The hens seem to like Old MacDonald Had a Farm. The sheet music can also be customized to personal preference. For a fee, a buyer can specify the song or even the language of choice.
These chickens make good pets, don’t require feeding or cleanup, and are wonderful craft art pieces. Indoor chickens can be purchased individually or in a flock @ IndoorChickens.com.
This is a startup business currently run from a solar-powered garage studio in Houston, Texas. After 35 years in the energy and finance world, I am gardening, playing golf and creating art.
SUSTAINABILITY STATEMENT:
Indoor Chickens are crafted from recycled plastic jugs (bleach bottles, milk jugs, water bottles, vinegar bottles, even olive oil bottles). They are then shaped using discarded and recycled styrofoam to keep them light. The body of the bird is then covered in paper mache. The paper mache is made from recycled newspaper. The chicken legs are formed from used coat hangers (again repurposing a waste material) and covered in epoxy. The hen and rooster heads are molded from an epoxy clay. The epoxy is GREENGUARD Certified, meaning that it has been 3rd party verified to contain virtually no VOC’s (volatile organic compounds). These indoor chickens are as green as can be and once covered in recycled sheet music, they sing as beautifully as you can imagine, without noise pollution. The roosters primarily sing classical daybreak songs like: Here Comes the Sun and Morning Has Broken, while the hens are especially good at Old MacDonald Had a Farm. Music choices come from recycled sheet music and are customizable to individual preference. These chickens make good pets, don’t require feeding or cleanup and are wonderful craft art pieces. The making of these birds has also kept plastic out of landfills. Even the electricity at the shop is solar and the creator a permaculture activist.

David Orr has been involved in mixed media arts since he was a young kid. Motived by his desire to push the envelope, he strives to take every piece to the next level and is heavily influenced by themes surrounding nature and agriculture. Today, he is focused on organic art: art in which each piece has an organic element. He often explores the intersection of organic and contemporary combining them harmoniously. He is doing sculpture, as well as painting and wall art that incorporate 3-D elements. The musical sculpted chickens are his latest works. Orr combines the beauty and popularity of the home chicken craze with a whimsical imaginary musical element.
